Mark is an Adjunct Professor of History at Monash. He was appointed as Professor of History in 2007, and was Head of the School of Historical Studies in 2009, having also worked in numerous roles for the School, the Faculty of Arts and the University. He moved to the United Kingdom at the end of 2009, and is a Professor of Modern Cultural and Social History and Head of the School of the Arts at the University of Liverpool. His writing has focused largely on histories of poverty--especially in The Lowest Rung (2003) and Miss Cutler and the Case of the Resurrected Horse (2011)--and he also authored A Little History of Australia (1997) and, with former Monash colleague Christina Twomey, A History of Australia (2011). A renowned teacher, he has won awards for teaching and postgraduate supervision, including a Citation from the fomer Australian Learning and Teaching Council and the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2008.
