Biography

Ilana Snyder's research focuses on the changes to social, cultural and educational practices associated with children and young people's use of digital media in school and out-of-school settings. A particular interest is the complex connections between literacy, technology and disadvantage. Australian Research Council-funded projects include two three-year studies: the first examined the relationships between the use of new technologies, pedagogy and organisational change in Australian higher education and the second explored the digital literacy practices of young people in all the domains of their lives. A recent project focused on the use of mobile phones to deliver literacy outcomes to Indigenous children in remote communities. A current project is investigating children's critical engagement with commercial activities when they use online social media in a cross-disciplinary collaboration with colleagues in the Marketing Department. Recent books include The Literacy Wars (2008) which examines the volatile public debates around literacy education and two collections of essays, co-edited with John Nieuwenhuysen: Closing the Gap in Education? (2010) which looks at the education of marginalised peoples and communities in southern world societies and A Home Away From Home? (2011) which considers the complexities of international education in globalising times. Ilana is a member of a number of editorial boards and a reviewer for several national and international funding bodies.
