Getting teachers to think about their teaching
“How do teachers learn how to teach and how do they then put that into practice and develop their knowledge, skills and ability over time? A lot of my research is on this important aspect of knowledge of teaching. I am very interested in developing and articulating teachers' professional knowledge - especially in science - and in so doing, draw more attention to why we need to better value the work of teachers.”
Professor John Loughran is interested in the pedagogy of teacher education – that is, he is trying to get teachers to reflect more on their job.
Having been a high school science teacher for ten years, he is interested in helping raise professional self-awareness amongst current science teachers, particularly in Catholic schools. Alongside other members of the Faculty of Education at Monash University, and with the help of an ARC Linkage grant, John is helping the Catholic Education Office Melbourne with its policy development.
“The Catholic Education Office has been trying to focus on science education quite a bit. We are helping them to develop a strategic approach to science education – something they see as a major goal for their system - so a lot of the work that we do is affecting them in very interesting ways. For instance, a lot of the policy documents that they have been writing around science education have been fairly seriously influenced by the work we’ve been doing in some of their schools with their teachers.”
But the change that he chiefly wants to see in education is on a much more individual level.
“I would expect to see science teachers in particular making that shift, to recognise what it is that they do, and to begin to be able to articulate that in much more professional and meaningful ways, so that they actually come to value and understand their own work better. We’re actually trying to help them understand and develop their knowledge of their practice in a much more serious way. For instance, I’m working with primary school teachers to get them to actually think about how they teach, and how their students learn, scientific literacy – and improve on this.”
John is also very interested in the culture closer to home – at Monash’s education faculty itself.
“The Faculty of Education at Monash has always had a very strong reputation in science education, and so it always attracted the best science educators from around the world. This meant that as a young academic, you were always fortunate to have access to the best people in the world. And you were encouraged – and expected – to be able to collaborate with them. This has been a well-established way of operating in the faculty for a long time. We’ve been very fortunate in the way that we’ve been mentored and brought on through the system, and we expect to do so the same for the people who follow us.”
