Biography

MIRI sets the world standard for comprehensive injury research, director says

Professor Rod McClure, the former head of the Monash University Accident Research Centre, says MUARC’s status as a world leader in road injury research overshadowed its work on other causes of injury. But he found the solution – the new Monash Injury Research Institute, where he’s the director and where MUARC now sits. Bringing together researchers from across Monash has made MIRI the most comprehensive, all-injury research centre in the world.

After starting his career putting road accident victims back together – including after two buses collided, leaving more than 30 dead and just as many injured – it’s not surprising that Rod moved into public health to prevent injury in the population rather than treat it in individuals.

It’s also not surprising that trauma physicians like Rod were behind the campaigns in the 1970s to slash the national road toll, which was then about 4000 deaths a year and is now about 1500.

Epidemiologists, who study public health issues such as injury as Rod now does, say every death hides about 30 serious injuries, hundreds of moderately serious and many thousands of less serious injuries that still result in short-term disability.

Rod says these figures highlight the enormous burden that injuries place on individuals, families and the community.

Victoria’s road toll campaigns led to the establishment of MUARC in 1987, which, in turn, led to changes in road laws and car designs, based on MUARC research. Rod’s challenge now is to extend  MUARC’s success to MIRI, which was set up in 2011 to have a similar impact on reducing death and injury from all causes.

MUARC now specifically focuses on transport safety research. It sits within MIRI alongside units for violence and suicide prevention; workplace safety; home, sport and leisure; patient safety; acute care; injury outcomes; and disaster resilience.

Rod says the new structure encourages greater collaboration across Monash and gives all MIRI researchers space in which to develop truly innovative research.

“By being fully integrated inside a university and able to draw on all the University’s intellectual resources, MIRI has the capacity to research the full range of injuries, whatever the cause.”

He says broadening MIRI’s horizon has created new opportunities and challenges, especially in the area of intentional injury, which covers violence, assaults, child abuse, self-harm and suicides.

“This broader approach to injury is a big challenge because, in the past, we’ve tended to look only at fragments of a problem, such as redesigning the car or the road, and ignore individual and systemic factors, and the underlying contextual and social dimensions.”

Rod says MIRI researchers collaborate with an even broader group of researchers than in the past to understand how regulation and social policy can help prevent injuries.

His researchers are collaborating with engineers and criminologists to understand fear of assault on public transport and prevent it.

Another team is exploring ways to improve safety in hospitals through better communication, decision making and awareness among staff who work in critical situations.

“You wouldn’t think that the problems faced by people in such different contexts as looking after patients in an emergency department, organising volunteers to fight a bushfire or trying to reduce driver distractions were so similar.

“But our human factors research team is exploring how all these situations relate to people trying to make optimal decisions when faced with multiple inputs and frames of reference. It wants to know how we can best organise our thoughts to achieve the best human response.”

Rod says the team’s work reflects a major motive behind the creation of MIRI – the need to find new ways to reduce injury.

“We don’t really want more of the same, where we just make incremental changes, because we’re starting to hit a plateau with a lot of injuries,” he says. “Injury prevention becomes really clever when we combine approaches and disciplines. MIRI brings people together to find clever solutions.”

MIR’s wider focus won’t mean paying less attention to road safety, Rod says, far from it.

“Road safety is as big a problem as ever, and much more needs to be done.”
