Nature at its finest

Macular degeneration is the world's leading cause of blindness, affecting 30 per cent of people over 70. Current treatments work only temporarily and must be delivered directly to the eye – to maintain their visions patients must endure monthly injections into the eyeball.

However, Professor Boyd's team are developing a novel from of drug delivery that could prevent sufferers from becoming, as he terms it, "pin-cushions".

Using naturally occurring lipids (molecules such as fats that bond together to form cell membranes)  and agricultural surfactants (compounds commonly used in washing detergents to emulsify fats and oils) Professor Boyd can create new materials that contain and then deliver drugs where and when they are needed.

The process, detailed in a recent submission to the Journal of the American Chemical Society, allows for the creation of light-sensitive materials that will release a dose of drug only when "switched on" by the use of an external laser.

This process would mean patients undergo a single procedure to implant the material, and report to their ophthalmologist only as symptoms appear for a simple laser activated dose of sight-restoring drug.

The secret to Professor Boyd's delivery system lies in allowing self-assembling  materials to bond together as they would in nature.

"These are purely self-assembled structures; they do the work themselves -  it’s nature at its finest," Professor Boyd says.

"Once we  understand the self-assembly process in materials we can begin to get them to do what we want, when we want them to do it. The drug delivery becomes the easy part. It’s getting the materials to do what we want them to do under the right conditions that's the trick."

Professor Boyd's team are also working on a targeted delivery system using the same materials.

Broken down into smaller particles, these drug-carrying materials would be introduced to the body and travel dormant through the blood stream, until they are ‘switched on’ by a laser beamed onto the specific site where they are needed.

While both the targeted and on-demand technologies are still in development, Professor Boyd has two further applications of the technology that are close to fruition.

His research group has received ARC Linkage funding to produce structured materials to create cheaper, more effective agricultural herbicides and pesticides that use less water in delivery. The engineered materials more vigorously cling to target crops, reducing losses caused by rain and resulting in orders of magnitude less chemicals and water used in the field.

Another ARC Linkage grant in conjunction with a biosensor company is being used to develop a hand-held meter capable of accurately and rapidly diagnosing conditions such as a heart attack in the doctor’s surgery . The biosensor would remove the ambiguity of diagnosing heart attacks - often confused with indigestion - and replace lengthy delays associated with current laboratory testing of blood samples.

Professor Boyd is confident both applications will become the core technology in the field within five years.
