Biography

 

Psychology & Cognitive Science

Remote control of mining machinery, diagnosing ataxia (a movement disorder), improving the engagement of distance education students with online materials, and teasing out the components of the sense of touch and pitting them against each other and other sensory systems are active research interests for Dr George Van Doorn. 

Research & Supervision Interests

  • Touch (haptics): psychophysics, cross-modal comparisons, haptic memory, active versus passive touch, haptic compnents, touch & virtual reality, presence, telerobotics & remote control & teleoperation
  • University teaching: focus on new technologies, distance student engagement
  • Medical applications: telehealth, assessment & diagnosis tool of ataxia, the use of virtual reality for training & rehabilitation
  • Parapsychology: out-of-body experiences and body swapping phenomena
