Biography

Murray is currently the Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Engineering and a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

His research interests encompass many aspects of Computational Fluid Dynamics and its application to a variety of research problems including free surface fluid flows, wave-structure interaction, chaos and mixing, turbulence in non-Newtonian fluids and solid-liquid two-phase flows.

He joined Monash University in March 2011 after 21 years in various Divisions of CSIRO, most recently CSIRO Mathematics, Statistics and Informatics.

Most recently his research has focussed on the application of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) to problems of wave-structure interaction such as rogue wave impact on offshore platforms.  Previously he has also developed Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) techniques for studying free surface flows, in particular problems with very large density ratio (e.g. air-water) for which standard numerical techniques are generally unstable. These techniques have been used to consider the detailed flow physics of splashing liquid drops, the rise and collapse of gas bubbles and the breaking of waves.

He is a co-inventor of the Rotated-Arc-Mixer (RAM), a novel device for in-line mixing of, and heat transfer in, highly viscous fluids.  This technology is currently being commercialised by CSIRO.

He has worked extensively with Australian mining and minerals processing companies through a sequence of AMIRA-funded projects that considered all aspects of physico-chemical modelling of gravity thickeners. He initially lead aspects of these projects and later coordinated multiple research groups across several sites and several organisations.  The oucomes from this project series lead to demonstrable savings by sponsor companies of over $250M.

In a second series of AMIRA-funded projects he developed a model of the turbulent flow of non-Newtonian fluids representative of minerals tailings and was able to categorise the onset of turbulence in these fluids.  This project works continues in the recently commenced AMIRA P1087.
