Professor David Morgan retired as a Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Monash University in June 2007. He joined Monash University in 1981, after post-doctoral studies at the Boston Biomedical Research Institute. He has also worked at the Brigham and Women's hospital, and at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University in Boston.
He received his BE (with Honours) degree from the University of Adelaide (1972), his PhD (1977) and a DSc (1992) from Monash University.
Professor Morgan's interests have been concentrated in Biomedical Engineering, concentrating on the action of muscles, and contributing especially to our understanding of the action of muscle as brakes, that is muscles that are forced to lengthen while generating tension, and therefore absorb energy. He generated a new hypothesis to explain the many anomalous observations that are made on such muscles, including the tenderness that follows unaccustomed eccentric exercise. Extensive test have supported this hypothesis, and it is now widely accepted. The hypothesis has led to several medical applications of the work in clinical practice, including the prevention of hamstring muscle tears. This work has been published in a hundred journal articles, as well as at conferences around the world. His current ISI presence is 127 papers with a total of 4024 citations for an average of 41.1 citations per paper and a maximum of 292 for Morgan (1990). The h-factor of these publications is 38, indicating 38 papers with 38 or more citations, up from 31 in 1997. This work has involved collaboration with physiologists, both here and overseas. He acts as a reviewer for the major physiological and biomechanical journals.
He has 25 years experience in teaching at an undergraduate and postgraduate level, particularly in the Biomedical Engineering course, which he helped establish, as well as in electronics, communications and Physiology. He served over two years as Head of Department.
Professor Morgan was instrumental in setting up the Monash University Centre for Biomedical Engineering, for which he has been Research Director and a board member. He was appointed to the first personal chair in the history of the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department.
He is a member of the Institution of Engineers of Australia, the IEEE, the Biophysical Society and the American College of Sports Medicine, reflecting the range of his interests, and an Honorary Professor in the Melbourne University Department of Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation Sciences Research Centre.
