Biography

Professor Sharon Pickering is an Australian Research Council Professorial Future Fellow and Professor of Criminology. She completed her Masters at the University of Southampton and PhD at the University of Melbourne (2000) with a study of women, policing and resistance in Northern Ireland. Upon returning to Australia she was appointed lecturer in Justice Studies at Charles Sturt University where she focused on developing research on the criminalisation of migration and extended her work into South East Asia through an ARC SPIRT project with Amnesty International on women and human rights in South East Asia (with Alder and Lambert). She held a visiting fellowship at Oxford University in the Refugee Studies Centre in 2000. In 2003 she moved to Monash University to take up a position in Criminology and expanded her work through collaborations with Professor Jude McCulloch and Dr Leanne Weber and in 2002 was a visiting scholar at the University of Westminster and in 2003 at Northern Arizona University. In 2004 she lead the ARC Linkage Project collaboration with Victoria Police on Counter Terrorism Policing and Culturally Diverse Communities which developed an evidence base for a social cohersion approach to counter-terrorism rooted in an abiding commitment to human rights. In 2006 she co-convened the first Monash Prato International Roundtable on Transnational Crime (held four times hence) which brings together an international network of criminological scholars. In 2009 she was appointed Editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology and later that year appointed Professor of Criminology. In 2009 and 2010 she was funded by the ARC in two large projects studying Fluid Security in the Asia Pacific and the use of Deportation in Australia and Internationally. In 2011 she founded the Border Observatory and the international network of scholars studying borders, security, crime and justice www.borderobservatory.org.

Research & Supervision Interests

    Professor Sharon Pickering researches irregular border crossing and has written in the areas of refugees and trafficking with a focus on gender and human rights. Sharon leads a series of Australian Research Council projects focusing on the intersections of security and migration, deportation, and police and community responses to Prejudice Motivated Crimes. She has worked extensively with government agencies and law enforcement and with local and international NGOs. She has previously worked in Northern Ireland, on counter-terrorism policing, and human rights and women in South East Asia. She is the immediate past editor Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology. She has recently taken up five year Australian Research Council Fellowship on Border Policing: Gender, Human Rights and Security. Her books include Sex Work (with Maher and Gerard); Globalization and Borders: Deaths at the Global Frontier (with Weber), Borders and Crime (with McCulloch); Gender, Borders and Violence; Sex Trafficking (with Segrave and Milivojevic); Counter-Terrorism Policing (with McCulloch and Wright-Neville); Borders, Mobility and Technologies of Control (with Weber); Refugees and State Crime; Critical Chatter: women and human rights in South East Asia (with Lambert and Alder); Global Issues, Women and Justice (with Lambert); Women, Policing and Resistance in Northern Ireland. She has a forthcoming edited collection (with McCulloch) on Borders and Crime and has begun work on editing the Routlege Handbook on Migration and Crime to be published in 2014.
