Biography

A hand-held lifesaver

Potentially life-threatening dangers linger in the waters left behind by floods and heavy rains. Professor Sam Adeloju has developed a world-first portable biosensor that can quickly and accurately detect surges in the nutrients that allow algae to thrive in stagnant waters and threaten our health. With climate change scientists warning of an increase in major flood events, Sam's device could save lives.

Sam has dedicated his career to enhancing modern science's early warning systems. Whether they are applied to food and beverages, water and soils or the human body, Sam's biosensors are our first indication that something is wrong.

Working with colleagues at the NanoScience and Sensor Technology Research Group, Sam uses nanotechnology to develop some of the most robust and sensitive biosensors available today.

The devices use nanolayers of a conducting polymer together with nanoparticles to trap bioactive components which then target specific enzymes.

The group's work has attracted international interest, as its creations can be applied widely. They can detect urea and cholesterol in blood samples; glucose in food and beverages; penicillinase in pharmaceutical tablets and milk samples; sulfite in wine, beer and food; and phosphate, nitrate or formate in water, soil and other environmental materials.

However, it is in the detection of nitrates and phosphates that Sam's work could have its biggest impact.

Nitrates and phosphates are essential for life on earth. Located at the bottom of the food chain, they are the main source of life-sustaining energy for plant life. However, when these powerful chemicals are washed from the land into rivers, lakes and urban water supplies they become a rich food source for algae. This leads to dramatic algal blooms that can contaminate drinking and irrigation water, with devastating consequences.

Water samples have traditionally been collected and sent to laboratories for testing for nitrate and phosphate. The whole process can take days, even weeks, before complete analytical data is available, particularly if the samples are taken from remote areas or a large number of samples are involved.

Sam's biosensor, which is the size of a pen, gives an instant and accurate read out of phosphate and nitrate levels down to parts per billion, allowing water authorities to make public health decisions immediately if there is a threat.

"Being able to measure nutrient and salinity levels immediately after flooding will be extremely important in providing rapid responses," Sam says.

"We will also achieve more sustainable water management practices and clean water supplies in the future."

Portable, highly-sensitive, reusable and cheap, Sam's device is among the world's first commercialised nanobiosensors and could change the way water monitoring is carried out in Australia and around the world.

As part of their wider interests, Sam's group is exploring a range of environmental technologies to analyse pollutants, in particular chemicals in water, soil and air, and the impact of human activities.

In recognition of his pioneering work in this area, Sam was awarded the Applied Chemistry Research Medal in 2009 and the R H Stokes Medal for Electrochemistry in 2011 by the Royal Australia Chemical Institute.
