Dr Damminda Alahakoon - Researcher Profile

Biography

Damminda Alahakoon graduated from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka with a First Class Honours Degree in Computer Science. He was awarded the University of Colombo ‘Student of the year’ gold medal as the best graduating student in 1995. His undergraduate computer science project was awarded the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Computer Award in 1994 (as the best computer science project from all Sri Lankan universities) for a project titled ‘An object oriented interface to Oracle’. He also has professional accountancy qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) and Institute of Chartered Accountants (Sri Lanka). In 2002 he received his PhD degree from Monash University, Australia. He was awarded the Monash Artificial Intelligence Prize in 2000 for a paper in IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks introducing a new clustering algorithm called the GSOM. Over the last 10 years the GSOM has been widely accepted internationally as a useful clustering algorithm and has been applied for a wide range of data mining applications including text mining and bio informatics.
