Biography

New thinking on transport safety

There is a new philosophy shaping transport safety. No longer is the driver the sole focus of accident prevention. Instead, expert researchers such as Dr Michael Lenné, are working to create whole of system solutions to help drivers stay safe on our roads.

The rise of systems-based thinking about accident prevention in road safety is one of the most promising developments Michael has witnessed during his two decades as a researcher. As leader of the Human Factors division and Associate Director of the world-renowned Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), Michael uses simulation and on-road testing to study the impacts of road infrastructure design on human performance and error, and the impacts of in-vehicle systems on driver performance and distraction.

Michael's work offers a broad understanding of what leads to accidents by investigating how the surrounding road infrastructure, the systems inside a car and existing policy contribute to human behaviour.

"Within a whole-of-systems view, the human behavioural element becomes only one component," Michael says.

"Within road safety, encouraging drivers to do the right thing is still acknowledged as very important, but creating a road system that supports them doing the right thing and accommodates or allows for any errors or mistakes they may inadvertently make is also crucial.

"So accident prevention is not just about enforcement, but also becomes about considering how things like road design and the use of in-vehicle technologies can help support a safe road system.

"Similar whole-of-system thinking has been evident in aviation safety for decades, so one of things the human factors team is trying to do is really take the systems safety thinking from other transport areas and bring it in to road safety."

The concept of safe systems within transport accident prevention was endorsed by the Victorian Government in 2010, and Michael and his Human Factors team are providing advice in areas including the continued development of driver distraction policy.

The team recently helped General Motors to design their infotainment systems to minimise driver distraction and aid road safety.

Michael has dedicated his research career to measuring human performance using simulation in road, rail and military aviation and maritime settings.

Beginning his research 18 years ago with a PhD in experimental psychology looking at the effects of alcohol and sleep loss on driving, Michael has developed an enviable reputation within the field.

He is the lead Australian researcher on two European Commission-funded projects using simulation and on-road testing to study both driver and rider behaviour.

He is currently guest editor of special issues in two leading transportation safety journals: Transport Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour  on the contemporary use of simulation in road safety research, and Accident Analysis and Prevention addressing on-road approaches to measurement of road user behaviour.

He is also series editor of the Ashgate Series entitled The Human Factors of Simulation and Assessment.
