Prof Mibel Aguilar - Researcher Profile

Biography

Professor Mibel Aguilar is a Bioanalytical Chemist in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Monash University. Her research focuses on biomembrane nanotechnology and peptidomimetic drug design and they are developing novel compounds that allow us to exploit the potential of peptides as drugs. She has over 150 publications and has supervised several PhD and Honours students. She is co-chair of the Australian Peptide Association and is also Associate Dean – Research Degrees in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences.

Her group focuses on peptide-based drug design and biomembrane nanotechnology. In collaboration with Prof Patrick Perlmutter (Chemistry), we are developing novel compounds that allow us to exploit the potential of peptides as drugs. We are currently applying our technology to the development of cancer vaccines, and new compounds for treatments of cardiovascular disease and HIV. We are also developing novel self-assembling systems for the production of new biomaterials for tissue engineering. Our membrane nanotechnology projects involve the development of new methods for membrane protein purification and analysis with application to Alzheimer’s, G protein-coupled receptor function, antimicrobial peptide function and new biosensor devices.

The long-term aim of these studies is to increase our understanding of the molecular basis of peptide & protein function and allow the rational design of peptide and protein based therapeutics.
