Dr Axel Fliethmann - Researcher Profile

Biography

Between 1995 and 2001, A Fliethmann worked at the University of Cologne, Germany. He was the research assistant of Professors Wilhelm VoŸkamp and Georg Stanitzek, working on one of the largest interdisciplinary research projects "Medien und kulturelle Kommunikation" (Media and cultural communication) in Germany in the field of humanities. The project involves about 70 researchers of all career levels from several disciplines (from computer science and psychology to art history, philologies and media studies). The high profile project also involves the Universities of Bonn and Aachen, with the University of Cologne as host University. Between 1995 and 1998, as part of the process of building the project's profile, Fliethmann has been working on general media theory and the question of disciplines. Parallel to that he finished his PhD on various paradoxes of literary critique. From 1998 to 2001 Fliethmann worked as a research fellow in this project examining the relationship between text and image and comparing the visual cultures of the 15th and 16th century to the visual culture of the 20th century.

Fliethmann was a project partner between 1999-2001 in the German equivalent to an ARC Discovery Project, the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft", with 33 other researchers. His own sub-project was "Die Differenz der „hnlichkeit, die „hnlichkeit der Differenz: Zur operativen Seite intermedialer Theoriebildung"(The differences in similarity, the similarity of differences: operative modes in inter-media theory). Axel Fliethmann joined Monash University in January 2002.
