Biography

Self-healing metals a matter of design

Metals that can heal or modify themselves may be a thing of the future, but according to Associate Professor Christopher Hutchinson it will be the not-too-distant future. His work is at the frontier of metallurgical development worldwide. The aim is to create alloys that actually improve themselves when stressed, rather than cracking under pressure.

While living organisms have an inborn capacity to respond dynamically to their environment and to reorganise themselves in order to heal an injury, in metals it is a matter of design. This capacity to respond is incorporated at an atomic level in the formulation of alloys such as aluminium or titanium. The atomic arrangement is manipulated and different elements added to achieve specific characteristics in the finished metal.

Christopher is researching ways to manipulate atoms so that they will respond to specific kinds of stress, triggering a rearrangement of atoms that actually enhances the properties of the material rather than degrading it. “It is definitely possible to do this,” he says. “Over the next 10 years we will see whether the promise of this kind of research eventuates into materials that have practical applications.”

His research is part of the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals, funded to 2013. Christopher has also received a four-year Australian Research Council Future Fellowship to support this project.

Aluminium fatigue is a major focus of his work. Fatigue results from the kind of alternating tension and compression that aircraft wings are subject to. It causes the metal to break down with potentially fatal consequences.

Other stresses include temperature fluctuations or pressure that can result in deformation of the metal. “We do a lot of modelling work to predict how metals will respond to particular stresses, to help with the design of the metals,” he says.

Christopher is also part of an exclusive international research network funded by the world’s largest steel producer, Arcelor Mittal. Monash University is one of half a dozen research centres the company has selected to develop the science underlying the next generation of steel products. Steel is the most important alloy in the world, representing 95 per cent of all alloy production. Christopher’s project for the company focuses on developing ultra high-strength steel for use in automotive body panels. “We are playing around with the way the atoms are arranged, selecting different elements to achieve the specifications we are after, so that at the end of the day the properties of the finished alloy are better.

“If it is stronger you can use less of it, vehicles will be lighter, and more fuel efficient. But the alloy has to be affordable, so you can’t add any exotic element you might like to. It also has to be plastic enough to form into sheets for use in the manufacturing process.”

The overall philosophy behind his work is to create materials and processes that are more efficient in some way. That might be a lighter, more durable or cheaper alloy. It could also be metals that are more easily recycled, or which are produced without the need to include toxic elements.

His research is based on the fundamental science that underpins the development of new materials. He sees it as shaping the future. “Everything is made of something and materials science and technology makes all the other engineering sciences possible.

“Today’s computers exist because a materials scientist was able to develop the transistor,” he says.  There are millions of ideas simply waiting for the right materials, and many more that will arise to take advantage of the potential that new materials offer.
