I commenced my career as a primary school teacher in New Zealand and moved to Australia in 1978. After a number of years in primary schools I entered into consultancy work with beginning teachers and in-service teacher education. I was a primary school principal for ten years and worked as a learning technologies consultant at regional, state and national levels. My PhD, focused on the re conceptualization of Australian teacher education, was awarded in 2005. I am a Glasser Scholar and am currently conducting research into the effectiveness of William Glasser's work, which challenges the prevailing notion of control operating in schools and in society at large. I have lead a research team for the last 12 years which has conducted a longitudinal study into the School for Student Leadership and produced over 15 publications. I have presented three invited international keynote addresses on re conceptualizing teacher education during 2010/ 2011- one in Bundung, Indonesia, one in Valparaiso, Chile and one in Lima, Peru in 2011. I was also invited to present a keynote address on Digital Portfolios at the Liquid Learning Conference forum in Melbourne, December, 2010. In 2010 I was elected to the position of Program Co-Chair of the Holistic Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Education Research Association (AERA), I am on the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Teacher Education, the Australian Journal of Computers in Education and the Journal of Transformative Education. I am a reviewer for both the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
