Meredith joined the Urban Water Governance program within the School of Geography and Environmental Science and Centre for Water Sensitive Cities as a Research Fellow in February 2010. She has a diverse background, both academically and professionally. After completing an Honours Science degree at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Botany, in which she received an Exhibition, she joined CSIRO as journal editor for the Australian Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research. In addition, she edited the book Limnology in Australia, which received a commendation in the Whitley Awards in 1986. Meredith then completed a Master of Landscape Architecture, again at the University of Melbourne, receiving the Ellis Stones Award for her minor-thesis research on landscape aesthetics.
She worked as a landscape architect in private practice, on residential, commercial and civic projects, for some years before undertaking a PhD in landscape perception at the University of Melbourne. Her thesis was titled 'Public Perceptions of Victorian Freshwater Wetlands: Preference, Health and Cultural Sustainability'. This varied experience informs Meredith's research within the Urban Water Governance Program. As part of Project 6 (Society and Institutions) within the Cities as Water Supply Catchments program of the Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, she has been investigating the risk perceptions of Australian urban water practitioners towards decentralised water systems, in a research collaboration with CSIRO in its "Water for a Healthy Country" National Research Flagship. She is to commence a research project within the new CRC for Water Sensitive Cities, exploring community receptivity towards retrofitting of green infrastructure in Australian cities. Her research interests include the perception of watery issues, water sensitive urban design, and landscape aesthetics.
