Her research expertise is in the field of forensic psychology, with a specific interest in the area of problem behaviours. These are acts that either intentionally or recklessly cause harm to others and often bring perpetrators into conflict with the criminal justice system. Problem behaviours include violence, sexually harmful behaviour, stalking, threats and deliberate firesetting (arson). Troy's current research focusses on understanding, assessing and treating people who engage in stalking or deliberate firesetting. She holds an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship for her work investigating risk assessment and psychological treatment of stalkers. Outside of her university role, Troy is also the current president of the Victorian Branch of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law (ANZAPPL).
