Almost daily in Victoria a young person brought into custody is found to have a major mental illness. What is surprising is that they are only diagnosed once they reach the criminal justice system, having gone undiagnosed and untreated for months, or even years. Irrespective of the particular population - prisoners, people in contact with the police, young offenders, murderers and others before the courts - the rates of mental illness are dramatically over-represented in the criminal justice system
Professor Ogloff's research and scholarly work is in the area of law and psychology. Most of his research and scholarly writing has been in the areas of offenders with mental illnesses, training in law and psychology, the assessment of risk for violence, and professional ethics. He also works in the jury field studying jurors' comprehension of judges' legal instructions.
Professor Ogloff is the Foundation Professor of Clinical Forensic Psychology at Monash University and Director of Psychological Services for the Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health, the state's forensic psychiatric service. He has established and directs the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science, a research, training and consultation institute in Monash University. In addition to his other work, he has also served as the president of the Canadian Psychological Association, the president of the American Psychology-Law Society, the president of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law, and he has been the chair of the Australian Psychological Association's College of Forensic Psychologists.
Professor Ogloff has published 16 books and monographs and more than 220 scholarly articles and book chapters. His research has been funded by the Australian Research Council, the Australian Institute of Criminology, and the National Health and Medical Research Council. He has served as Editor of the International Journal of Forensic Mental Health and has served as Associate Editor of Law and Human Behavior. He has served or currently serves on the editorial board of nine additional journals.
Professor Ogloff's work has been recognised with a number of awards, including, most recently the 2012 Donald Andrews Career Contributions Award for Criminal Justice Psychology from the Canadian Psychological Association and the 2009 Award for Distinguished Contributions in Forensic Psychology from the Australian Psychological Society.
