Biography

I am a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University Gippsland where my teaching and reserach focuses on critical engagement with theories and practices of difference and diversity.

My work is concerned with the cultural politics of schooling. I am especially interested in how dominant discourses that circulate around notions of difference, diversity and inclusion play out in the subjectivities, the ways of being and doing that are available to students through schooling and how these impact on participation in and outcomes at school. My current doctoral research focuses on the performativity of identities online by young people who identify with Asperger's Syndrome and how deficit framings of autism as abnormality are resisted and subverted in these virtual spaces to create online communities of difference. My previous research has focused on the impact of teacher's constructions on intelligence on their pedagogy and professional identity as well an investigation of teacher professional development. My work is informed by poststructuralism especially by the theories of Mikhail Bahktin and Judith Butler. I teach in the areas of diversity and inclusive education as well as critical disability studies in primary and secondary preservice teacher degree programs. My research interests include

  • Sociocultural politics of schooling
  • Discourses of difference, diversity and 'inclusion'
  • Troubling pedagogies
  • Schooling subjectivities
  • Critical disability studies
  • Critical autism studies especially Asperger's Syndrome
  • Poststructural theories and/of education
