IT responds to the feminine psyche
Focusing on the needs of users is paramount when it comes to designing good information systems. This is the underlying philosophy that Associate Professor Julie Fisher brings to her work developing information systems. Chief among her projects has been the national Breast Cancer Knowledge Online portal, which has provided a vital forum for health information to more than 70,000 users. More details on Julie's work can be found http://www.sims.monash.edu.au/staff/jfisher/
Julie says the development of a quality information system involves taking into account the psychology of design and personalising the structure to reflect the user’s way of thinking.
The Breast Cancer Knowledge Online (BCKO) portal has been designed to meet the breast cancer information requirements of women by matching their specific profiles with detailed descriptions of resources.
“The way we constructed the portal was unique and really pushed the boundaries in what was possible,” she says. Instead of catering for a general audience, the portal responds to demographic differences that shape varied needs, including age, educational levels, socio-economic backgrounds, stages of treatment, ethnicity and residential locations.
“For example, the system has been built to recognise that a woman in her seventies will have different concerns about the effects of mastectomy than a woman in her forties,” she explains. A younger woman might want more information about alternatives to a total mastectomy. Avoiding surgery may not be as important to an older woman.
With access to health information considered an important right, Julie says the thousands of people who have turned to the portal since it was established in 2004 drive her continuing commitment to the project.
“I’m more interested in how people think of and react with technology than how the technology works,” she says. Usability is often more a matter of design than capability, particularly in the IT world. Commonplace items frequently provide inspiration in her quest to create information systems that are easier for people to use.
Julie is also helping to design and implement long-term strategies that will encourage more women into the information and communication technology (ICT) sector through a project called Digital Divas. It is a collaboration between the Faculty of Education and Centre for Organisational and Social Informatics at Monash University, as well as researchers from Swinburne and Deakin Universities. The project is funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant.
The project centres on a schools-based intervention strategy to encourage girls to study ICT. Julie says there is a widening professional gap between women and men in this sector. The latest Australian data show the number of women working in ICT remained static at 18 per cent between 2006 and 2009. The number of female VCE students who chose this area as their first study preference has declined from just over 2000 in 2000 to 445 in 2010.
“It’s often an issue of critical mass. Girls studying ICT are more likely to feel isolated by the male majority, so they’re less likely to complete their studies.” The project is investigating which materials are most likely to stimulate girls’ interest, track their attitudes to ICT careers and determine how a program could be integrated into the curriculum.
But Julie says the focus of the project also extends beyond research to include the areas of welfare and advocacy. “It’s about changing perceptions and the way people look at IT, which is a very difficult thing to do,” she says.
