Biography

 

Dr Daniel Palmer is a writer and Senior Lecturer in the Art Theory Program in the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at Monash University. His research and professional practice focuses on contemporary art and cultural theory, with a particular emphasis on photography and digital media. Prior to joining Monash in 2005, Palmer worked as a curator at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, where he organised exhibitions including ‘Between Place and Non-Place’ (2001) and the ‘Click Regional Digital Art Program’ (2001–2). He is currently a board member and chair of CCP’s exhibition committee.

 

Palmer’s publications include the books Twelve Australian Photo Artists (2009), co-authored with Dr Blair French, and the edited volume Photogenic: Essays/Photography/CCP 2000–2004 (2005). His scholarly writings on photography have appeared in journals such as Photographies, Philosophy of Photography, Angelaki and Reading Room. A prolific writer and commentator, Palmer has also published over sixty catalogue essays and fifty art reviews since 1997, and continues to contribute to art magazines including Art & Australia and Frieze. He is regularly invited to deliver public lectures around Australia.

 

Recent international conference presentations include: ‘Simryn Gill: Photography and the Ruins of Colonialism’ at ‘Global Photographies: Histories, Theories, Practices’, Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dublin(2008); ‘Emotional Archives’ at ‘Feeling Photography’, University of Toronto (2009); ‘The Rhetoric of the JPEG’ at ‘The Versatile Image: Photography in the Era of Web 2.0’, University of Sunderland (2011); and ‘The Collaborative Turn in Contemporary Photography’ at ‘Helsinki Photomedia: Images in Circulation’, Aalto University and its School of Art and Design in Helsinki (2012).

 

Palmer has been the recipient of various awards and fellowships including a State Library of Victoria ‘Creative Fellowship’ (2005), Early Career Research Award, Faculty of Art & Design (2006), Stone Summer Theory Institute Fellowship, Art Institute of Chicago (2009); and the Monash Research Accelerator Program (2011–12).

 

Palmer’s current research focuses on digital photography, emerging from the ARC Discovery Project ‘Genealogies of Digital Light’ (2008–11) with Professor Sean Cubitt and Dr Les Walkling; globalization and photography, with Professor David Bate from the University of Westminster; and a book on photography and collaboration.
