Biography

Michael Vale has been exhibiting professionally since 1986. 

Recent solo exhibitions have included Lamplike (Trocadero Artspace 2012), Untitled (green) (Screenspace 2011), The Innocents (with Donna McRae, Westspace 2011), R.I.P. (Linden 2009) and Le Chien Qui Fume (Monash Faculty Gallery 2006, Westspace 2005, TCB 2005)

Selected group exhibitions have included The Archibald Prize (AGNSW 2012), Museums in the Incident (cur. Steven Rendall, Monash Faculty Gallery 2012), Beautiful Volcanoes (cur. MV, Monash Faculty Gallery 2011), Loop 09 (Barcelona 2009), Nardini's Garage (Bassano al Grappa, Italy 2008), Who Let the Dogs Out? (cur. Merryn Gates, Lake Maquarie Gallery NSW, Hazlehurst Regional Gallery NSW 2008), This Crazy Love (cur. Jan Duffy, Linden 2007), Salone dei Beni e Delle Attivita’ Culturati (Terminal Passageri, Venice 2006), Pet Project (cur. Bec Dean, Australian Centre for Photography - Sydney, Melbourne Arts Festival 2006).

Michael’s short film and video works have been screened around Australia and in Italy, Spain, the USA and Canada, and The Long Walk (2006) was awarded “best film on art” at the 2006 Asolo Artfilm Festival (Italy). Since 2003 he has been working with the film maker Donna McRae and was production designer on her 2011 feature film Johnny Ghost.

Michael was the founding director of Linden Contemporary Art Centre, St Kilda (1985-7) and has worked as a curator, scriptwriter, mural & scenery painter, set designer, interior designer, illustrator and paint manufacturer. In 1999 he re-designed and refurbished the Ghost Train at Luna Park (with Bob Clutterbuck).
