Associate Director Dr Judith Charlton
Dr Jude Charlton is Associate Director, Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), where she leads the Behavioural Safety Science research team. Jude also coordinates the Postgraduate Studies Program in the Monash Injury Research Institute at Monash University (MIRI). Jude is a behavioural scientist with expertise in ageing, cognitive neuroscience education, and developmental psychology and is a registered psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia. Jude has extensive research experience in the safe mobility of vulnerable road users and her team has international recognition for their research on older drivers, fitness-to-drive, the effects of medial conditions on driving and child occupant safety.
Jude completed her PhD at the University of Waterloo in Canada, in human movement science and neuropsychology. Jude manages several major international studies involving vision impaired drivers, drivers with Traumatic Brain Injury, and a large cohort study of older drivers, the Ozcandrive study. These projects examine the role of vision, cognitive and physical functions in driving using state of the art driving simulators, instrumented vehicles and naturalistic driving methods. Jude also manages an international collaboration investigating children's safety in cars using novel naturalistic driving methods and covert video video monitoring of child occupant behaviour and driver performance during everyday car trips.
Since joining MUARC in 2000, Jude has authored over 100 publications on road safety issues. She is engaged in many national and international research activities, collaborating with government bodies, health practitioners, the motor vehicle industry and road safety academics in Europe and North America. Jude serves on several road safety committees, including the Australasian College of Road Safety, the University of Florida Institute for Mobility, Activity and Participation (I-MAP), and the US Transportation Research Board (TRB) Driver Medical Review Committee. As a Director of BrainLink, Jude contributes in a pro-bono capacity to community service initiatives for people with brain impairment from trauma and disease.
