Dr Adiva Sifris is a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand South Africa and Monash University Australia. She is admitted to practise in South Africa, the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia. After practising as a family lawyer in South Africa and Australia, Dr Sifris moved to academia at Monash University where she teaches family law.
Dr Sifris is the author of Children and the Lesbian Homo-nuclear Family: A challenge for Australian family law in the new millennium, she is co author of Family Law in Australia and co-editor of Current Trends in Same-sex Relationships. She has written widely in the area of family law, both in relation to children and property, with a particular focus on de facto relationships, same-sex parenting and family violence.
She was one of the chief investigators on the team that conducted research into family violence during and after (parental) relationship breakdown. This report was explicitly acknowledged in The Explanatory Memorandum to the Family Law Amendment (Family Violence) Bill 2010 as providing a ‘strong evidence base for reform’. The Bill has since been passed into legislation. Dr Sifris is currently working on research papers in the areas of child abduction, family violence, and same-sex parenting
