Biography

Dr Cameron Duff is a Monash Fellow in the Social Sciences and Health Research Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences at Monash University.

Duff’s research interests include the study of place, health and human development with a particular focus on the social, affective and material dimensions of health and wellbeing. He is especially interested in the nature of enabling environments and the development of place based prevention and recovery initiatives. Duff has explored these interests in studies of youth development, substance use and mental health in diverse settings in both Canada and Australia. Duff is currently working on a book for Springer International (forthcoming in 2013) on the application of Gilles Deleuze’s work for research in the sociology of health and illness.

Research & Supervision Interests

My primary research interests concern the relationship between health, place and social inclusion with a particular focus on the lived experience of mental illness and substance use. My work traces the social, affective and material dimensions of health and illness, drawing from a range of contemporary social theories including the work of Gilles Deleuze, Bruno Latour and Michel Foucault. My goal first, is to contribute to the development of theoretically informed accounts of health and illness, more alert to the social, structural and experiential dimensions of health. Second, I work to apply these theoretical frames in rigorous empirical studies of significant social problems like substance misuse and mental illness.

I have developed these interests in research collaborations in Canada, the United States and Australia employing varied qualitative and ethnographic research designs. Current research partners include MIND Australia and Oygen Youth Health, as well as scholars at the University of Tasmania and the University of Melbourne. I also have ongoing international collaborations with scholars at the University of Warwick, University College London, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addictions Research at the University of Victoria, Canada.
