Biography

Professor Rod Devenish is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is also Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Structural & Functional Microbial Genomics. His current major research interest is the field of autophagy.

Rod has a longstanding interest and commitment to research training, and currently is Academic Director of the Monash Institute for Graduate Reseaech  (0.4 fractional secondment).

In collaboration with Centre colleagues he is investigating the interaction of bacterial pathogens with mammalian host cell autophagy.  The particular focus of this research is how Burkholderia pseudomallei, the aetiological agent of Melioidosis, avoids destruction by host cell autophagy after it escapes from phagosomes. Other aspects of his work on autophagy concern the turnover of organelles, particularly mitochondria and the nucleus, in yeast. This work builds on his long standing international reputation in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) molecular cell biology with research that has focused principally on aspects of mitochondrial biogenesis, in particular the structure and function of ATP synthase
