Biography

Carl works as a group leader for the Laboratory of DNA Damage & Repair and Genomics in the Centre of Innate Immunology and Infectious Disease which is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences at Monash University as a Senior Research Fellow and Senior Scientist. He obtained a PhD in biochemistry from the University of California in 1993 where he studied interactions of steroid hormone receptors and their DNA binding elements to regulate transcription. He did post-doctoral studies at the University of California, San Francisco where he carried out cancer research in the Department of Radiation Oncology. During this time, he discovered the mechanism that cells make use of to repair DNA double-strand breaks at the ends of chromosomes which are termed telomeres.

Carl joined the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2001 where he investigated the molecular causes of adverse reactions that occur in some individuals after cancer radiotherapy. He joined Monash Institute of Medical Research to continue investigations aimed to improve radiotherapy. One of his current projects takes advantage of the Australian Synchrotron as a tool to study microbeam radiotherapy. This is an emergent field where remarkable preliminary results have been obtained using microbeam for radiotherapy in animal models that show relatively little normal tissue damage with a concomitant high tumoricidal effect. Carl  also  investigates fibrosis,  Dupuytren's disease, DNA damage & repair, and genomics.
