Biography

How can sitting in front of light box improve the life of a patient with traumatic brain injury?  About 70% of TBI patients, typically young males, experiencing debilitating fatigue that ruins their social, family and working life.  Neuropsychologist and Director of the Monash-Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre, Professor Jennie Ponsford is leading a pioneering study into light therapy as a treatment for head injury sufferers.

Every year thousands of young people sustain traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which cause  complex and debilitating cognitive, behavioural and physical problems, including fatigue, that interfere with their independence in daily activities, their ability to work, study, pursue leisure activities, socialise and have relationships and cause long-term emotional problems.

A world leader in her field, Professor Jennie Ponsford has spent the past 30 years engaged in clinical work and research aiming to characterise these problems and develop effective treatments. She and her team of researchers and doctoral students have investigated outcomes following mild, moderate and severe TBI, factors predicting outcome, including genetic, age and injury-related factors. She co-ordinates one of the world’s largest  and comprehensive longitudinal  outcome studies, tracking over 2000 patients over 20 years following injury.

Her comprehensive studies of fatigue and sleep disturbances, conducted in collaboration with A/Prof Shantha Rajaratnam, have led to the development of exciting world-first treatments, such as light therapy, which hold significant promise for alleviating fatigue and daytime sleepiness. Pharmacological and psychological therapies for fatigue and sleep disturbance are also being trialled.

Findings from the largest ever successful trial of drug therapy to reduce attentional problems, conducted in collaboration with Dr Catherine Willmott, are underpinning ground-breaking imaging studies to examine the brain pathways that mediate effective treatments. Other imaging studies are characterising the processes and factors predicting of recovery from injury.

Her characterisation of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, depression and substance abuse following traumatic brain injury, is underpinning the development of adapted psychological therapy currently being trialled in an NHMRC-funded project.

Her ground-breaking work on mild TBI has underpinned the development of management strategies, resulting in the implementation of information booklets in hospitals worldwide.

The esteem with which this work is held is reflected in the fact that Jennie was the only international keynote speaker at a recent Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems conference in Washington DC, USA in June 2011. She has given more than 30 keynote addresses and 150 conference presentations in the past decade and published over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and two books on the subject.

She plays key roles in numerous international organisations and is currently the Incoming President of the International Neuropsychological Society, also serving on the Executive of the International Brain Injury Association and the World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation, and was involved in organising of its 7th World Congress in Melbourne in May 2012.  She is also an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment.

Research & Supervision Interests

Professor Jennie Ponsford is the Director of the Monash-Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre (formerly known as the Bethesda Rehabilitation Research Centre) which was created in 2000. Its aim is to conduct research in trauma rehabilitation, with a view to reducing long-term disability. Over 20 psychologists and researchers are associated with the centre and form a dynamic research team.  Affiliated Monash staff include Dr Marina Downing, Ms Christina Furtado, Dr Kate Gould, Dr Michele Grant, Dr Adam McKay, Dr Audrey McKinlay, Ms Kelly Sinclair, Dr Catherine Willmott, and Dr Dana Wong.

The Research Centre is self-funded by research grants. The TAC is the largest financial supporter of the Centre, providing substantial funding for the longitudinal head injury outcome study and associated projects. The NHMRC, Monash University, the Jack Brockhoff Foundation, William Buckland Foundation, Australian Research Council and the Department of Human Services have also supported specific projects. The Research Centre has strong links with the Department of Psychology at Monash University and numerous doctoral students conduct research within the Centre.

The research being conducted by the MERRC is recognised internationally, as is evident from the significant number of invited international conference presentations made by Professor Ponsford, her inclusion on panels constituted by the US Department of Defense and the World Health Organisation, her invitation to submit reviews to high profile journals such as the British Medical Journal, Current Opinion in Neurology and Nature Clinical Practice Neurology, and the calibre of its numerous journal publications. The information booklets produced in the mild TBI outcomes studies have been requested by over 100 different clinical and research bodies worldwide and translated into several languages. This work is thus having a significant impact on the field.  Outcome after moderate and severe traumatic brain injury has been examined in considerable breadth, in terms of psychosocial functioning, employment, cognition, coping, pain, psychiatric health, sexual functioning, and family relationships.  Cultural influences upon outcome have also been and currently are a focus of study.  Management protocols have also been a research focus, including management of patients in PTA, rehabilitation of cognitive and behavioural dysfunction, and development and evaluation of community-based models of rehabilitation. Our outcome data has highlighted the high frequency of anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain and alcohol use and identified some factors associated with these problems, including coping style, which in turn has sparked further inquiry into psychiatric outcome for survivors of TBI, and psychological factors which affect functional outcome.  Our comprehensive research on psychological disorders post-injury has formed the basis of intervention programs which are currently being designed and evaluated, and which comprise the corpus of work to be undertaken over the next 5 years in the NHMRC-funded Centre of Research Excellence in Traumatic Brain Injury Psychosocial Rehabilitation.
