Biography

Selby works in the Department of Design at Monash University as a Senior Lecturer and Acting Head of Department.

Selby Coxon's research interests include: Kitchen cooking appliances, mining industry, capital goods, transportation design, and introducing industrial design techniques and strategies into new areas of endeavour.

Professionally Selby has worked for: Philips electronics (The Netherlands), Satherley Design (UK) Anglo Nordic Design and Odd Thorsen design (Norway) Schlumberger (UK and France) and IDC (UK).

Selby has also practiced in a wide range of consumer and capital goods.

Through teaching, Selby aims to create an enthusiastic and inspiring studio activity that seeks to engage in the many facets of the profession of Industrial Design.

An experiential learning activity is applied, that is laden with possibility and where thinking skills are at the heart of the process. Studio encourages self-direction in learning, supported by good quality constructive feedback within a structure that caters for individual aptitude and aspirations to eventually realize a very capable graduate.

Selby is a member of the Design Technology Curriculum Advisory board, part of the Victorian Curriculum & Assessment Authority.

Commercial Projects

  • Industrial Design Consultancy (Datchet England) VAX First ever three and one vacuum cleaner, Aston Martin, Godrej (India), GE Whirlpool, Aircraft Furnishings Limited, Virgin, Cathay Pacific, Boots, Proctor and Gamble, Reckitt and Coleman, Deutscher Telecom, Rentokill, Philips, De La Rue.
  • Schlumberger corporate   design office (Farnborough England and Paris France).Petrol pumps, point of sale electronic terminals, automatic test equipment energy management systems (gas and electricity metering) including 'Domotecque' then a revolutionary house management system, public phones and faxes, parking meters, oil field services and seismic survey vessels. Prepared ergonomic audits for oil platforms (particularly control rooms) designed interior cabin spaces for data logging vehicles and instrument rooms for seismic survey vessels. 'Contolix' security scanners for Channel Tunnel and Charles De Gaulle Airport, Riossy in Paris.
  • Odd Thorsen Design AS. Bathroom tap fittings for Borma. Anglo Nordic Design AS. Developed equipment for Norwegian national telecommunications company TDK, the marine industry, office lighting and fire alarm systems.
  • Satherley Design Associates. Telecommunications equipment for British Telecom. Hobbyist equipment for Kodak Eastman (Winner of a Merit award from the Association of American Packaging Manufacturers).
  • Philips Corporate Industrial Design Concern. Stadium and domestic kitchen lighting.
