Biography

Evolutionary link provides clue to new disease control strategies

A series of ground-breaking findings about the nature of bacteria and their surface architecture have earned international recognition for Professor Trevor Lithgow. He has discovered ways to probe and analyze the molecular machines that bacteria use to build the outer surface. This knowledge lays the foundation for helping scientists to develop new ways to fight disease.

Bacterial diseases develop when human cells allow toxic proteins to invade. But how are these toxins secreted by bacteria, and why does a human cell accept such foreign proteins rather than fending off the invasion? Questions like these have intrigued Professor Trevor Lithgow since he was an undergraduate.

"Once you've got an interest in biology, these sorts of questions fascinate you," he says. "In the past people had looked at bacteria as tiny packages, as germs, without giving them due credit as complex cellular organisms. The complexity of bacterial cells is awesome, and amazing molecular machines are used to build their outer walls and membranes, and to shoot toxins into human cells."

Evolutionary connections he discovered mean that bacterial molecular machines can be studied using technology previously developed to study equivalent machines found in the mitochondria of human cells.

The discovery led to Trevor being elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. In 2008 he was awarded an ARC Federation Fellowship to move to Monash and establish a unit to work on cellular microbiology.

Having defined the general principles of why bacterial pathogens are able to invade human cells, Trevor, with his cellular microbiology team, is now working towards an understanding of how this happens.

"This matters if we are to become creative enough to design new ways to prevent the increasing numbers of bacterial infections that are resistant to off-the-shelf antibiotics."
