Biography

Nimmi Candappa is a Research Fellow at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), with Civil Engineering qualifications. She has worked in the road safety field for over ten years, having worked both with  implementation of road safety measures at VicRoads, and in research at MUARC.

While at MUARC she has worked on a variety of projects including:

  • Developing measures to improve safety within the Docklands precinct
  • Developing measures to improve safety at work sites of several prominent organisations
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of flexible barrier on Victorian roads
  • Establishing best practice in urban subdivision design

Her current research focus is on identifying and developing intersection designs that are compatible with Safe System, through a government funded $2M project. The findings of this study to date have been presented in The Netherlands, Canada and China. She was seconded for 9 months to SWOV the Dutch equivalent research organisation. Here she was exposed to best-practice thinking on improving safety fundamentally.

She is the recipient of the "Practitioner Award" at the 2005 Road Safety Research Policing and Education Conference.
