A/Professor Joanne Deppeler is Associate Dean of Research Degrees in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. As a qualified educational psychologist and teacher, Joanne Deppeler has spent most of her career in educational contexts, with a particular focus on students experiencing learning challenges. She is committed to advancing theory, research and practice in the field of inclusive education. She has had extensive experience in leading school development research projects and in the professional learning of teachers within the context of improving inclusive practices. In particular, she is interested in finding new and innovative ways of researching the complexity of professional practice and learning in order to improve teacher quality and the outcomes of schooling for a range of students. A/Prof Deppeler publishes widely and contributes to the professional and policy domains at state, national and international levels. Her co-authored book with Tim Loreman Inclusive Education was awarded the Exceptional Book of the Year Award 2011, and has been recommended by the Ministry of Education, Ukraine as the key reading material for all pre-service and in-service teacher preparation programs in Ukraine. She has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Deans Award for Excellence in Innovation and External Collaboration.

Current research projects include investigating: Teacher collaboration in school-based inquiry for improving outcomes for disadvantaged students and those with disabilities, The effectiveness and social validity of video technologies for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and The effectiveness of a DEECD initiative aimed at building capacity of schools to respond to and support mental health concerns in children and young people.
