Dan works in the Faculty of Art Design & Architecture at Monash University as a Senior Lecturer.
Born in St.Paul Minnesota, Dan Wollmering immigrated to Australia in 1975. Since then, he has held 25 solo exhibitions and participated in over 45 group exhibitions in Australia and internationally, including the 7th, 8th and 9th Mildura Sculpture Triennials and the 1st and 3rd Australian Sculpture Triennials.
In Australia, his work is represented in public and corporate collections, including regional galleries and universities. He has exhibited in China, Japan and the USA with work in public collections. His research interests and practice include: abstract form in the age of complexity; synergies between sculpture, architecture and engineering and public sculpture as political/socio commentary. He has worked in a variety of mediums with specialist expertise in: wood and steel fabrication, metal casting - including liaison with industry cutting-edge technologies: CNC milling, 3-D printing and laser metal cutting.
He has undertaken art residencies and symposia in Canada, China, Malaysia and the USA - fabricating large-scale public sculptures as well as smaller works. Most recently, at Rimbun Dahan, Centre for the Arts, Kuala Lumpur, sponsored by the award winning architectural firm Hijjas Kasturi.
Over the years, he has delivered papers at conferences and seminars in Australia that have taken him to Canada, China, Egypt, Italy, New Zealand and the USA. In late 2011, he delivered a paper titled 'On the Waterfront: Anger and Activism as Agents for Public Sculpture at the International Constructed Environment Conference in Chicago.
Wollmering has extensive teaching, lecturing and administrate experience: Secondary Art & Craft; State Teachers College; TAFE; Institutes of Advanced Education before Monash University where he is currently a Senior Lecturer in sculpture and extended media within the Department of Fine Art. He is a regular examiner for PhD and MFA candidates at university art and design schools throughout Australia.
In keeping with his exhibition profile, he has undertaken public sculpture commissions for the City of Glen Eira, City of Moreland, Victoria and internationally, the Shanghai Sculpture Park and the Anderson Sculpture Park in Minnesota, as well as private collectors in Australia and overseas.
In 2008, Wollmering won the prestigious Contempora Sculpture Award at Docklands, Melbourne for a work titled Waterfront and in 2011, a curated survey exhibition titled: The Shape of Things: Selections & Reflections (1982-2011) was held at the Latrobe Regional Gallery.
