Biography

Applying psychology in the real world

Motorcycle rider risk taking, remote control of mining machinery in the Pilbara, adaptation of coastal communities to the effects of climate change, more precisely and accurately diagnosing ataxia (a movement disorder), encouraging drivers to conserve fuel, improving the engagement of distance education students with online materials, teasing out the components of the sense of touch and pitting them against other sensory systems…

These and more are active research interests for Dr Mark Symmons. Perhaps the one thing that unifies all of these current projects is that they are applications of psychology in the real world; employing scientific principles in carefully constructed studies to solve and better understand real-world problems.

Although to Mark the fact that these projects have real-world application is a bonus. He is simply interested in the challenges of conducting carefully constructed research. To put it simply, Mark likes to find stuff out.

Research & Supervision Interests

Mark's research interests are quite wide-ranging but can be grouped into a couple of disparate categories:

    • Road safety: particularly motorcycles, heavy vehicles, fleets, ecodriving, cyclists, risk, driver & rider behaviour
    • Touch (haptics): psychophysics, cross-modal comparisons, haptic memory, active versus passive touch, haptic compnents, touch & virtual reality, presence, telerobotics & remote control & teleoperation
    • University teaching: focus on new technologies, distance student engagement
    • Medical applications: telehealth, assessment & diagnosis tool of ataxia, the use of virtual reality for training & rehabilitation
    • Sustainability: Environmental psychology, attitudes & behaviour change, climate change adaptation, ecodriving
    • Sport psychology: recreational cycling, pariticpation in one-off events like Tough Mudder
