Brief descriptions of Raman's fundamental research contributions:
Graphene: Ultrathin Coatings for Novel Approach to Remarkable Resistance to Electrochemical Degradation of Metals: Raman has very recent lead a ground-breaking work, demonstrating that an ultra-thin graphene coating can remarkably improve corrosion resistance of metals and alloys. An ultra-thin (a couple of mono-atomic layers) coating of graphene has been shown to improve corrosion resistance of copper in the highly corrosive sea water environment, by over 1.5 order of magnitude.
Nanocrystalline Alloys: Next Generation Materials for Resistance to Environmental Degradation: Raman proposed for the first time a novel concept that nanocrystalline structure can provide extraordinary resistance to environmental degradation. His hypothesis was validated though his own experimental as well as theoretical investigations. This study also demonstrated for the first time that it is possible to achieve similar corrosion resistance in nanocrystalline iron-chromium alloys at only 10% chromium, as microcrystalline stainless steels (18-20% chromium). This novel finding has value-added applications, and has led to a collaboration with the Center for Clean Energy Engineering (C2E2) at Univ of Connecticut (USA).
Novel Technique for Improved Design Data for Mitigation of Stress Corrosion Cracking: Raman led a Monash team for an interdisciplinary research into successful development, validation and patenting of Circumferential Notch Tensile (CNT) testing: a new, simple and relatively inexpensive technique (c.f. 20% of the costs of the traditional techniques) for the determination of threshold stress intensity factor (KISCC). KISCC is the most important design data for components operating in corrosive environments. CNT technique received recognition for its novelty. Raman collaborates with US Naval Research Lab and Oak Ridge National Lab.
Mitigation of Extraordinary Electrochemical Corrosion of Magnesium Alloys: Magnesium (Mg) alloys are among the lightest engineering materials and Australia has large Mg minerals. But, poor corrosion resistance os Mg, grossly restricts wider use of Mg alloys. This a serious research challenge, but until this problem is circumvented, exploiting Mg resources will continue to be grossly limited. Raman's group has developed a new class of coatings that provides nearly three orders of magnitude superior corrosion resistance than other coating in this class.
