Biography

Mark works in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University as a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His work is in the area of fluid dynamics, especially computational modeling of fluid behavior in complex geometries.

Mark Thompson obtained a PhD from the Department of Mathematics at Monash University in 1985 in the area of computational modelling applied to examining the collapse of stars at the ends of their lives. After this he joined the CSIRO Division of Energy Technology at Highett as a post-doctoral fellow, spending one year at Stanford University in the Division of Thermosciences working with Professor Joel Ferziger on more earth-bound fluid mechanics projects. At the end of this post-doc, he accepted a permanent position with the CSIRO Division of Energy Technology, which later became the Division of Building Construction and Engineering. During that time he was involved with the development of numerical methods and computer codes for modelling industrial flow and heat transfer problems, undertaking large industrial projects with companies such as CRA, Comalco and AMIRA. He left CSIRO in 1995 as a principal research scientisis to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Clayton Campus of Monash University.

At Monash he was the Associate Dean of Research Training for the Faculty of Engineering between 2003-2007 and became a full professor in 2007. For the four years between 2008-2011, he was Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He has supervised more than 30 masters and PhD students to completion since joining Monash, mostly on fundamental fluid mechanics projects: especially concerning flow stability, fluid induced vibration and biological fluid mechanics. Lately he has been involved with optimising the aerodynamics and automobiles and trucks, and elite cyclists, as well as biofluid applications such as stenoses, cell-cell and cell-blood vessel wall interactions, and bioreactors for grwoing cells.
