New approach to map what lies beneath us
Dr Peter Betts is an explorer at heart. As a geophysicist, his ideal adventure might be a journey to the centre of the Earth. But until technology catches up with science fiction, he is creating alternative means to explore what lies deep in the Earth’s crust. This includes a world-leading blend of geophysics, geology, mathematics and computer programming to map what lies beneath our feet, and which could soon reveal the location of valuable new mineral deposits.
Peter’s research will also help to identify the potential long-term effects on the Earth’s crust of extracting oil, gas and water from deep underground reservoirs and pumping the gaps full of carbon dioxide.
Mapping the geology of the Bass Strait basin is his newest research project. This is a collaboration with Monash University colleagues Professor Louis Moresi and Dr Laurent Ailleres and still in the early phases of development. The aim is to provide a better understanding of the risks associated with plans to store carbon in the rock within the basin.
To do this, Peter needs to generate a model of the basin geology, without actually being able to see what is there. “It is like trying to put a jigsaw puzzle together in the dark, with some of the pieces missing,” he says.
The basin mapping project follows an Australian Research Council (ARC) grant to create a geological model of the whole Australian continent. Beginning in 2011, Peter expects the continental project will take three years to complete. It will be based on new techniques he is developing to combine geophysical and geological data, creating more accurate models of geological structures.
One of the main collaborators in the new modelling techniques project is Professor Mark Jessell at Toulousse University in France. There is no doubt mining interests will benefit from research that could more accurately identify where deposits of valuable minerals lie. The French are targeting gold resources beneath the jungles of West Africa. For Peter, it will be further deposits of copper, gold, lead and zinc that already form the backbone of the Australian mining sector.
Peter says geological and geophysical research is often conducted independently of each other. Each approach has significant information gaps when it comes to modelling the underlying geology. Rock samples that provide the basis for geological information represent only a miniscule fraction of the Earth’s crust. They generally are collected from the top 100 metres, but the crust’s many layers are up to 100 kilometres thick.
Geophysics uses magnetic and gravity fields to identify different rock formations deep in the Earth, but Peter says the same data can be produced by any number of different rock formations. His work to combine the geology and geophysics uses geological data to provide a ‘reality check’ on the magnetic and gravity field readings. It is an attempt to provide a more accurate end result than either approach provides independently.
His modelling of the Australian continent is essentially a process of discovery history – uncovering Earth-shaping forces dating back billions of years. “What we see today is the product of a long evolution. The planet, life and their physical and chemical properties have changed over time,” he says. “The hard thing is that we only have what is here today to look at. We are trying to back-calculate billions of years of history to work out what the geology was doing in the past.”
