Biography

World leading cognitive neuroscientist and Head of the Experimental Neuropsychology Research Unit, Professor Nellie Georgiou-Karistianis’ research focuses on exploring linkages between brain mechanisms and the cognitive and motor signatures in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Friedreich ataxia). Via the use of state-of-the-art motor, cognitive and brain imaging technologies her research has significantly enhanced the understanding of behavioural consequences of disease, enabled novel strategies for management of symptoms, and provided ground-breaking new insights on functional operations of the human brain.

In her keynote address to 500 international researchers, patients and community members at the World Congress on Huntington’s disease held in Melbourne in late 2011, Professor Georgiou-Karistianis spoke about the latest advances in neuroimaging techniques currently being used to study cognitive decline in sufferers of the genetic condition.

The leading research uses cutting-edge technologies to study the structure and function of the brain in individuals diagnosed with the genetic disorder but before the onset of symptoms.  It aims to identify early measures or biomarkers which can be used to identify and track the disease’s progression.
“Once these sensitive biomarkers are identified they could then be promoted to pharmaceutical companies to help propel the development of clinical drug trials in the bid to find an effective early intervention for the disease.”
Monash is the only university in the world to study some of these biomarkers tracking the changes occurring in the brains of patients.
“We are using state-of-the-art imaging technology to understand how the brain tissue changes over time, especially during the preclinical stages.”
The study has found significant structural and functional changes occur in the brain up to 15 years prior to the onset of symptoms.
“Many potential treatments for Huntington’s disease are in the pipeline, but it is impossible to test treatments without sensitive measures or biomarkers,”
