Biography

Caroline works in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences at Monash University as a Senior Research Fellow. She is a Deputy Director of the Ritchie Centre in the Monash Institute for Medical Research and heads the Women's Health Theme, where she leads the Endometrial Stem Cell Group. Her research focuses on characterising epithelial progenitor cells and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) she discovered in the highly regenerative lining of the uterus (endometrium) and examining their role in endometriosis and endometrial cancer. She leads a collaboration with CSIRO to develop a tissue engineering approach as a cell based therapy to treat pelvic organ prolapse using endometrial MSC and novel scaffold materials.

Caroline has received a number of national and international awards for her research. She was recently honoured for her pioneering research in Endometriosis by the Endometriosis Foundation of America (2011) in New York. She was awarded a British Council Early Career Research Exchange Award to undertake a sabbatical at Cambridge University, UK in 2007, the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology Established Investigator Award in 2005, the prestigous Society for Reproductive Biology Research Centre for Reproductive Health Award for Excellence in Reproductive Biology Research in 2011.

She was featured in Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) “10 of the Best Research Projects in 2008” and was a NHMRC RD Wright Fellow (2007-11).  Caroline has received numerous invitations to speak at international conferences on her piorneering work on endometrial stem/progenitor cells and their role in gynaecological disease.

Caroline has been funded by NHMRC since 2004 and currently holds 2 NHMRC Project grants that commenced in 2012. She is also a Chief Investigator on a Research Infrastructure Support Services (RISS) grant to develop endometrial MSC for cell production for translation into the clinic.  She is a CI of the lead organisation (MIMR) of the Victorial Consortium for Cell Therapies which raised $2M from Therapeutic Innovations Australia (TIA) for establishing closed systems for production of cells under clinical grade Good Manufacturing Practice.

Caroline has organised Symposia for international conferences including World Congress of Endometriosis (2011), Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (2012) and Society for Gynecological Investigation (2011, 2013). She also engages the community through the media, writes for The Conversation, as well as hosting a well attened Public Forum on "Childbirth and the Pelvic Floor - new solutions to age old problems" in 2012.

She serves on the Editorial Boards of Fertility and Sterility and Reproductive Sciences and was Associate Editor for Human Reproduction (2005-8). She is Vice President of the Australasian Society for Stem Cell Research and was Secretary for the Society for Reproductive Biology (2005-7).
