Brett Furlonger is a lecturer in counselling, psychology and special education. He has published widely and previously worked at the University of Melbourne as a Research Fellow and Post-Graduate Coordinator in Perth. Dr Furlonger received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees and Diploma of Educational Psychology from the University of Auckland and his Ph.D from the University of Melbourne. His Masters degree was awarded the prestigious Oticon Grant ($3,000) for Deafness Research.
He has been awarded three major educational scholarships ($15,000, $7,000 & $35,000) and a psychological study award ($112,000). He has been responsible for more than 30 publications and has served as a reviewer or editorial board member on such journals as The Teacher Educator, Australian Journal of Education of the Deaf, Journal of Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, Deafness and Education International and the Australian Educational and Developmental Psychologist. One of his specialities is deaf education, a topic he became immersed in when he worked as a psychologist for the deaf following graduation. Since then he has trained teachers of the deaf in Auckland (New Zealand), Melbourne (Australia), and Perth (Western Australia). In 2004 he won a Telstra community grant ($33,000) to develop home training videos for parents of deaf children who wished to assist in the language development of their children.
Currently, Brett visits Singapore and Hong Kong up to four times a year where he teaches into a Masters in Counselling course, conducts research in the area of student life stress and coping and supervises students in the Singapore PhD program.
