Professor Cooper is Monash University Director of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC), Deputy Director and Head of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Research at The Alfred Hospital Melbourne, and immediate past Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group (ANZICS-CTG). He trained at medicine and intensive care in Adelaide followed by a research fellowship at University of British Columbia, Canada. He is a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Practitioner Fellow, full Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at Monash University and Hon. Professorial Fellow at The George Institute, University of Sydney. He has published more than 150 journal papers including 11 in New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). He has been a Principal or Co-investigator on peer reviewed research grants exceeding $42 million including 16 NHMRC grants. Research foci include randomised clinical trials in traumatic brain injury, sepsis, acute lung injury, resuscitation fluids, and blood transfusion.
Intensive care
As an intensive care specialist, Professor Jamie Cooper is confronted on a daily basis with questions about how best to care for his patients. As a highly respected clinical researcher, he is pulling together resources from across the world to find answers to those same questions. The result of this duality is better treatment for trauma patients.
Jamie has a record of research funding and publications that is equal to anyone in his field. He has published more than 140 journal papers, including 11 in the high impact New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). He has been a principal or co-investigator on peer reviewed research grants exceeding $37 million, including 16 NHMRC grants.
However, his contribution to modern medical science is best measured in the intensive care units of major hospitals throughout Australia. In addition to his role as Deputy Director and Head of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Research at The Alfred Hospital Melbourne, Jamie's research activity's have led directly to improved treatments for trauma patients.
About 1000 Australians are admitted to ICUs every year with severe traumatic brain injury. Even with the best medical care currently available, only half of such patients achieve independent survival. Around one-quarter lose their lives.
Within such a life-and-death context, the value of Jamie's research can been seen beyond the impressive publication and funding numbers.
He has conducted a definitive study of ambulance fluid resuscitation techniques, changed the way similar resuscitation procedures are performed in the ICU, and provided the first evidence that the favoured surgical procedure to combat pressure on the brain may prove detrimental to patients in the long run.
The latter finding, published in the NEJM in April 2011, relates to the use of decompressive craniectomy in traumatic brain injury. The procedure involves removing a section of the skull to relieve pressure on the injured brain. Jamie's study, in collaboration with more than a dozen colleagues, found that while the procedure offered short term advantages over the traditional use of medical coma, patients suffered worse brain function after six months. The corollary was also true – the alternative therapy with barbiturate-induced coma lead to better brain function at six months. The finding controversially defied prevailing medical opinion, but, backed by rigorous scientific evidence, has been accepted in ICUs the world over.
Jamie attributes the impact he and his colleagues have had in changing the treatment of patients to his dual clinical-and-research roles.
"Because we are clinical specialists we ask research questions that are not necessarily coming from the lab; they're coming from questions we are asking while treating individual patients," Jamie says.
"We see the patients with the head injuries and we know how catastrophic those injuries can be to patients and to families, and we think, 'If only we could do something different in the milieu of what we do'."
"We know it's not going to be a magic bullet from a drug company because it's just too complicated an area. And so we are looking carefully at each of our practices and saying, 'Are we doing this the right way?' "
Jamie is not alone in his research. He has played a leading hand in developing two major research networks. He is Monash University Director of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC) and immediate past Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group (ANZICS-CTG).
The ANZIC-RC is currently conducting country-wide, NHMRC-funded trials across the intensive care areas of sepsis, infection and shock, nutrition in critical illness, head injury, lung injury, and blood transfusion.
