Dr Haider Mannan joined the Epidemiology Modelling Unit of Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine as a Research Fellow (top of academic level B) in February 2008. He has developed and published a number of risk equations for predicting cardiovascular incidence and all-cause mortality based on Framingham Heart Study. The use of these risk equations improved upon the measures conventionally used for assessing the effect of cigarette smoking as a risk factor of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. He is an experienced SAS programmer and has developed and published SAS macro programs implementing important statistical tools related to prediction and validation of these risk equations. He is currently leading a number of research projects assessing the greater role of cessation of cigarette smoking in reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality and in improving quality and disability adjusted life years in light of the Australian Government policy to cut down on tobacco consumption. He has been collaborating with his unit head Dr Chris Stevenson in a number of projects, for example, to look at the role of modifiable health risk factors in explaining regional variations within the Australian population and estimate the cost-effectiveness of low dose aspirin as compared to FOBT screening in preventing deaths due to colorectal cancer, among others. He has also been collaborating with Dr Anna Peeters and Dr Rory Wolfe in a number of projects related to projecting the Australian obesity epidemic, relationship between detailed and new measures of obesity and cardiovascular diseases, and methodology for development of chronic disease risk prediction equations. To date he has published 25 research articles in peer reviewed journals, 1 book, 7 consultancy/technical reports and 16 conference presentations. He currently has 10 more research articles undergoing peer review in various journals. He is currently CIB for an ARC funded grant worth 217,430 AUD and CID for an NHMRC and NHF grant of 179,362 AUD and previously in 2007 won as CIA a small internal grant of 12,600 AUD at University of Sydney.
He has been successfully arranging and chairing a monthly special interest group meeting on epidemiological modelling and methods at DEPM since early 2008. He has so far worked in 9 Phd review committees as an independent academic. He is currently co-supervising two Phd students-one from DEPM and another from CORE.
He is about to commence a consultancy project with Chronic Disease Management Network. From December 2008-March 2009 he was involved as a biostatistical consultant for Medibank Private Limited analyzing the predictors of Medibank high value claims for those with cardiovascular conditions. In June 2011 he finished a consultancy work with Centre for Adolescent Health, Murdoch Children's Research Institute, Melbourne, modeling the association between binge drinking by Victorian adolescents and their self-reported mood.
He has been teaching advanced topics in epidemiological modeling as part of a DEPM short course on chronic disease modeling. His other teaching roles included teaching an undergraduate and MPH biostatistics course jointly with A/Prof Rory Wolfe and a Masters level online biostatistics course (linear models) offered through BCA with Prof Andrew Forbes, and in 2009 jointly coordinated a course on clinical research methods with A/Prof Max de Courten. His list of grants, journal publications, reports and conference presentations, awards and invitations is provided in the following attachment.
