Biography

My scientific career began wih a BSc in microbiology/molecular cellular biology at the University of Queensland, followed by a Honours degree in microbiology working on immuno-evasion and viral infections.I continued to work at CICR/DICIMM UQ with a PhD in virology in nigel mcmillans laboratory studying the IFN evasion of chicken pox virus/VZV. Since then I have continued my research focusing on innate immunity and its cross-talk with cellular biology in Bryan Williams laboratory at MIMR / Monash University. In addition I help with the MHRP/MIMR node of Monash MIcroImaging.

Research Activities

PKR, a protein kinase involved in the cellular stress response and translation inhibition, and its role in inflammation, including TLR signalling.
PKR’s role in cellular migration, invasion, cellular machinery and phagocytosis.
Viral infection and innate immunity.

Techniques/Expertise

Mammalian cell culture (epithelial cells, bone marrow derived macrophages, macrophage lines, T cell lines, whole splenocytes)
Immuno-detection techniques (eg. ELISA, Western blotting, flow cytometry)
TLR ligand screening
Gene knockdown (RNAi)
Confocal and live-cell microscopy, fluorescence, deconvolution microscopy, FRET, FRAP, FLIM, BiFC,
Molecular Biology (cloning, mutagenesis, library screening)
Viral infection assays (SFV, Adv5, HSV1, EMCV, RSV, VZV)
Cellular movement (cellular migration, phagocytic uptake)
