Biography

There has been a tremendous burst of information about cognition and its neural bases since the late 1960s. As new knowledge develops, there is a need to continually update the measurement tools that we use to assess cognition. Keeping the tools updated is essential for evolving an in-depth understanding of cognitive deficits that cause a decline in function in people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Such up to date tools also play a key role in understanding the impact of neuropsychiatric disorders such as addiction. This drive to understand cognitive function in disorders is at the forefront of Professor Julie Stout’s research.  Her work, focused on Huntington’s Disease and on addictive behaviour, aims to develop and adapt cutting edge cognitive science tools for clinical settings.

Professor Julie Stout is trained as a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. She is an expert in the field of sensitive cognitive assessment in clinical populations, seeks to explain why patients present differently.  Her research on Huntington’s disease (HD), ongoing since her days as a post-doctoral fellow, has led to better information for clinicians and is now being applied more broadly in the field of drug abuse, gambling, and incarcerated offenders and in particular risky decision making.

There is no known cure for HD, a devastating inherited neurological disease, and existing treatments are only available for those with severe impairment. Currently collaborating and leading in three international and Monash-based studies of HD, Julie and her team at the Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory seek to detect and map how gradual changes in clinical markers appear and use this information to provide recommendations on clinical trial designs.

Although people with HD and addictive disorders may at first appear very different, they both have alterations in brain function, and the neural systems that are affected actually overlap.   Julie’s work on HD (and also on Parkinson’s disease) has evolved into research with drug abusers, gamblers, and incarcerated offenders. The main aim of the HD work is sensitive measurement of cognition and early detection of disease signs as well as cognitive measurement for clinical trials. The main aim of the work in addiction aims to understand why people make impulsive, and often very risky, decisions.   She questions how people differ from each other in how they learn from experience, especially in the context of risk, reward, and punishment. She examines the underlying neural mechanisms, as well as the cognitive processes associated with decision making. Ultimately, she believes that by identifying the underlying neurological and cognitive processes, it will become possible to target treatments more squarely at the underlying causes of these behaviour disorders.
