Harriet Radermacher is a Research Fellow in the School of Primary Health Care, working both as part of the Healthy Ageing Research Unit and the Problem Gambling Research and Treatment Centre.
On moving to Australia from the UK in 2002, Harriet completed a Doctorate of Applied Psychology (Community Psychology) at Victoria University, Melbourne (2003-2006). Prior to her current role, Harriet worked as a Research Assistant at the Alma Unit for Research on Ageing (AURA) at Victoria University.
Underpinning Harriet’s research interests is her desire to give voice to the lived experiences of those people who are often excluded and marginalised in current society; and to contribute to knowledge about how to better access and include their voices in research. She is committed to working in ethical and participatory ways with the community to ensure that her work is relevant, meaningful and useful for those that are the focus of the research. The majority of her work to date has explored what it means to age well, for the purpose of improving the quality of life of older people. In particular, she is interested in cultural diversity and ageing, and how the experience of migration and cultural identity impacts on ageing well in Australia.
Harriet has conducted research with a variety of organisations (from small non-profit agencies to federal government departments) which have focused not only on generating high quality evidence, but also ensuring that the evidence can be used by the community and disseminated to inform future policy and planning.
Harriet is a Member of the Australian Psychological Society (MAPS) and the College of Community Psychologists.
