Biography

Geraldine is interested in the power of the visual arts and how a belief in one’s own creative potential and sense of agency can be fostered through immersive art pedagogy. She is a Lecturer in Art Education, Studio Arts and Creative Arts in the Faculty of Education and works with pre-service teachers in primary and early childhood education courses.

As an artist, researcher and teacher she has an enduring interest in the way that local knowledge/s and immersive a/r/t (art, research and teaching) can be developed for use by schools and community groups so as to build creative experiences that connect people to place/s and each other.

Her Masters in Art and Design was awarded through exhibition and exegesis and explored the impact that nature and digital technologies have on image and process. Inspired by arts based research, Geraldine is now undertaking a PhD on immersive art pedagogy and how it connects artist, researcher and teacher identities. She explores this theme through artwork, the making of a photo book and by exegesis. Geraldine theorizes through practice and enjoys teaching, supervising and supporting practice and project based research.

Geraldine’s lifelong passion for art has led her to undertake work as an Art Co-ordinator, Festival co-ordinator, Set painter, Gallery worker, Community artist, exhibiting artist and art based volunteer. She has taught across age groups, in/formal, community, early learning, school and University settings in national and international contexts. She has an extensive exhibition history with artwork exhibited in solo, curated and group shows across International, State and Private Galleries. Her love of playful art practice is evidenced by her work with theRefluxus collaborative art group and the Roar II collective.

Community Service

Creative connections through arts education

I am a keen advocate of Art/s REACH which is an activity that has arisen from my Resarech activities. Art/s REACH forms creative connections between Monash Faculty of Education and the community. Through Art/s REACH Monash University’s pre-service teachers in Primary and Early Childhood work with children from local Schools and Early Learning Centres to provide innovative art/s experiences. In 2011/12 Art REACH went to Elsternwick Primary school where children created a large mural and explored the school’s orchard through art. Mahogany Rise Primary school also visited Monash in 2011/12 to explore the theme of Animals and Growth.
