Biography

The importance of structure

What do aircraft structures, buried water pipes and your grandmother's hip all have in common? The answer is that the structural health of each can be better monitored thanks to the research of Professor Wing Kong Chiu. 

Chiu is something of an engineering renaissance man. His research into in-situ structural health monitoring, acoustics, vibration and advanced composites has been used in a host of different applications.

As the co-chair of the Asia-Pacific Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring, and an established collaborator with the Australian government’s Defence Science and Technology Organisation, US Air Force and government agencies in Singapore, Chiu has gained global respect for his expertise and versatility.

His work essentially focuses on stress analysis and integrity assessment of any kind of mechanical structure. His sensors can monitor the structural health of complex structures as they perform. The advantage he offers is that day-to-day monitoring of crucial pieces of hardware can be completed without any equipment downtime. It means repairs are made only when necessary, and in the most cost-effective manner available. 

This work has been applied to aircraft structures, where Chiu's advances in structural health monitoring means engineers can find structural defects in the most difficult-to-reach and difficult-to-inspection regions. His work has led to the use of health monitoring data in determining the most cost-optimal removal of train wheels for maintenance. He has also extended his work to advanced maritime composite structures.

His latest work involves developing sensors that can be buried along with crucial water supply pipes to monitor their health and guard against potentially disastrous pipe bursts.

The research is part of a major Monash collaboration with water authorities across Australia, the UK and the US to monitor buried pipes, and optimise the expensive process of pipe maintenance and replacement.

Chiu says the breadth of his research stems from a fundamental belief that sound engineering principles should be developed with real-world uses in mind.

"I appreciate the benefits of fundamental research, but one of the attractive features of structural health monitoring is the integration of fundamental research and how we can apply that to real engineering applications," Chiu says.

"I think it is important to keep the engineering aspect of any project in mind.

"I have always been attracted to engineering by the lure of seeing things work, and seeing them work for long periods of time, and how it actually serves the masses."

Chiu has applied the insights gained from working with aircraft structures and freight trains to the field of medical science.

In collaboration with orthopaedic surgeons at the Alfred Hospital, Chiu is working on a smart structure strategy that can be integrated with surgical structures used in pelvic repair to monitor a patient's recovery from major trauma. 

"The underlying engineering principles are very similar from an aircraft structure to the surgical structures in the human body," Chiu says.

"We are still dealing with a mechanical system, and trying to optimise their performance. In this case we are talking about time-optimal patient mobilisation."
