Moulding matter

Renowned inorganic chemist Dr Andreas Stasch regards every day in the lab as a chance to discover something new. Already responsible for world-first discoveries, Andreas is always trying to mould the building blocks of matter into previously unimagined shapes.

 

Andreas' work is about "firsts", about discovering something new. Within his lab, researchers are exploring the foundations of chemistry, developing new types of compounds, new chemical systems and trying to create functional chemical groups that have never previously existed and investigate the reactivity of these systems.

As an inorganic chemist specialising in organometallic compounds, Andreas works primarily with inanimate, non-biological compounds that include bonds between carbon and a metal. Andreas and his team are capable of creating new types of molecules in the lab with unusual bonding modes and with elements in unusual oxidation states. This opens up a world of possibility and discovery.

"I love chemistry because almost every day you find out something about the nature of the elements," Andreas says.

"Often, we can’t really be sure what the outcome of a new reaction will be and what will happen.

"Working with the unusual molecules often leaves us with results we never thought would happen.  Sometimes our work results in the first time certain molecules have been captured anywhere in the world."

Andreas and his Monash colleague, Professor Cameron Jones, achieved such a landmark when they created the first stable compounds with a metal-metal bond between two magnesium atoms. The compounds opened up new possibilities for chemical bonding, breaking with conventionally held wisdom. The new class of compound they created has already proven to be a powerful tool in the lab, and is capable of undergoing many unprecedented reactions.

The results made news across the scientific world and were published in the prestigious journal Science.

The key to that success was Andreas' expertise in stabilising unusual, air-and-moisture sensitive molecules in entirely new oxidation states and bonding modes. To do this he also designs new ligands, or groups that sit on a central element and help stabilise the unusual complexes.

This allows the isolation of compound classes that were previously thought to only exist at very low temperatures.

"Some of these compounds are extremely sensitive so you require a certain set of skills to manipulate and analyse them, but nonetheless because they are more reactive than most other molecules, you can be rewarded with an interesting reactivity that you haven't seen before.

"Sometimes you get completely surprised with what is happening in the flask."

In the future Andreas' research could have practical applications for chemical synthesis and other technologies, including the replacement of rare and toxic elements with more common, cheaper and safer materials.
