Man of more than steel
When man meets metal the results are often painful. That is not the case in the world of Professor Yuri Estrin. His work as a materials scientist includes a search for ways to improve the lives of people with bones that need support or those who require dental implants.
Yuri and his team in the Department of Materials Engineering at Monash University are world leaders in the field of physical metallurgy, including the design of novel materials and biomaterials.
Improving the quality of titanium-metal implants is one example of their work. “If you require an implant it can now be made of new material which is thinner because it is stronger, and that means less invasive surgery,” Yuri says. “If it turns out the bio-compatibility has been improved as well then you win on both counts.”
Yuri’s work has an international following. He was awarded the title of world-class university professor by Seoul National University in Korea and an honorary doctorate from the Russian Academy of Sciences, the highest science body in his country of birth.
It is clear he gains great satisfaction from scientific research in a field outsiders might consider dry. “Retaining a capability of having fun is extremely important. There is the joy of discovery, and the opportunity to come across unexpected results which, in turn, take you into other areas of research. That part of my work is very gratifying.”
Yuri says the primary aspect of his work involves describing the properties of metals in a better way and developing computer models that help predict their behaviour and response under various conditions. Steel is an example.
“What I have been trying to do for many years is to develop models which are simple and robust enough to be put in computational codes which will assist in the calculation of the behaviour of engineering structures,” he says. “That’s my traditional area of research, but that took me into materials which are more novel and exciting, particularly in nanostructured materials with exceptional mechanical properties.”
It was during this work that Yuri saw the potential for biomedical applications, leading him into work with colleagues from different scientific disciplines, including stem-cell researchers, to analyse complex questions such as cell growth rates on different metals.
His most recent research is in materials design guided by geometry principles. Brittle materials, for example, may break easily under stress in a large structure. But if that structure is constructed of small building blocks and assembled in a smart way, the material will be much harder to break.
“We have three-dimensional blocks with such a geometry that if you put them together to form a plate you cannot remove any element from the plate because they are locked within the structure by their neighbours.”
There are potentially significant applications of his work, such as in the heat-resistant tiles on space vehicles re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
“Currently they use very simple tiles just glued to the body of the craft, whereas our interlocking principle could strengthen the tiles and keep them as a coherent structure,” he says.
